MOVING TO LOUISIANA

Looking for Counties?

Welcome to Parishes.

Louisiana does things a little differently. Instead of counties, our state is divided into parishes.

Same basic idea. Very Louisiana name.

LOUISIANA 101

So, What Exactly Is a Parish?

A parish is Louisiana's version of a county. Parishes are local government areas that help organize services, taxes, schools, elections and other public functions.

If you're used to searching by county, just think “parish” instead.
WHY PARISH LINES MATTER

Your Parish Can Affect More Than Your Address.

Schools

Public school systems are often organized by parish, so parish boundaries can matter when researching education options.

Taxes

Property taxes and local tax rates can vary by parish and municipality.

Services

Parish and city boundaries can affect utilities, emergency services and other local resources.

Commute

Parish lines, bridges and major roadways can all influence your daily drive.

Flood & Insurance

Local geography and property-specific information can affect flood and insurance considerations.

Community Feel

Each parish — and each community within it — can have its own personality and lifestyle.

SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA

Cameron Parish

Jefferson Davis Parish

East of Calcasieu Parish and home to communities such as Jennings and Welsh.

Beauregard Parish

North of Calcasieu Parish, with communities including DeRidder and surrounding rural areas.

Allen Parish

GREATER BATON ROUGE

Parishes Around the Capital Region.

In Greater Baton Rouge, many buyers consider homes across several parishes depending on work location, commute and lifestyle.

East Baton Rouge Parish

Home to Baton Rouge, Zachary, Central and a wide range of neighborhoods, employers, healthcare, universities and amenities.

Ascension Parish

South and southeast of Baton Rouge, including Prairieville and Gonzales. Popular with buyers commuting into Baton Rouge and the industrial corridor.

Livingston Parish

East of Baton Rouge, including Denham Springs, Walker and other growing residential communities along the I-12 corridor.

West Baton Rouge Parish

Across the Mississippi River from Baton Rouge, with communities such as Port Allen and convenient access to the Capital Region.

Iberville Parish

South and west of Baton Rouge, with smaller communities and access to major industrial and transportation corridors.

East Feliciana & West Feliciana

North of Baton Rouge, offering smaller communities, rural areas and a different pace from the city and suburbs.

A BATON ROUGE TIP

“Baton Rouge” May Mean More Than Baton Rouge.

When someone says they're moving to Baton Rouge, their eventual home may actually be in Baton Rouge, Prairieville, Gonzales, Denham Springs, Walker, Zachary, Central or another surrounding community.

That's why we start with where you'll be working and how you want to live — not just the city name on your relocation paperwork.

In the Capital Region, understanding the parish map can make your home search much easier.
ONE MORE THING

City Name and Parish Name Aren't Always the Same.

You may live in a city, town or unincorporated area while still being part of a larger parish.

For example, Lake Charles and Sulphur are in Calcasieu Parish, while Prairieville and Gonzales are in Ascension Parish.

Don't worry about memorizing it all. That's what local people are for.
WHEN COMPARING AREAS

Ask These Questions.

Which parish is this property in?

Knowing the parish helps you understand local services, schools and tax considerations.

Is it inside city limits?

City limits can affect municipal services, utilities and other local considerations.

What will my commute look like?

Distance is only part of the story. Bridges, highways and work locations matter too.
